Environment is a choice- all the things you surround yourself with. Even if you live in the city- do you use an air purifier? Do you protect yourself from EMF and blue light exposure? Do you get out into morning sunshine and try and get fresh air? What kinds of products do you use? Do they add to your toxic bucket? The environment also includes your community- who you surround yourself with.
Environment can be a tricky one to organize and manage because of the way we think of our environment- it seems fixed, not changeable. This is the first mental adjustment that you need to make. There are a lot of things that you can do to deal with the undesirable, and seemingly unchangeable things about your environment.
Assuming you don’t have the choice to move- look around and adjust the variables in your environment that could be leading to excess toxicity. If you live in a high-rise apartment in the middle of a city- it’s difficult to change that. But there are a lot of things you can do to manage the space you live so that it is the healthiest it can be for you and your healing process.
Air quality is important. The air inside of homes and businesses are up to 5 times as polluted as outside air according to the environmental protection agency. This means the air in your home needs to be cleaned since nowadays people tend to spend more time inside than our ancestors ever did. An air purifier, not simply an air filter is necessary to aid your body in healing. Consider it like this: if your body is working to remove pollution from every breath you take, it doesn’t have as much energy as it could, to assist in healing or even functioning like it’s designed. We’re quick to take a Tylenol for a headache, but have we ever considered it could be from what we’re breathing? Building materials can be very toxic! They off-gas their varnishes, fire retardants and filling right into the air that we breathe. Taking it further, some buildings have been around for a century. Their building materials and practices were not considering air quality. Research super HEPA filters and choose one that you and your family like. I chose an air doctor but there are a lot of different options. HEPA will not catch mold spores or even some environmental irritants like pollens from certain trees. A super HEPA offers 10 x as much filtration. Additionally, open your windows for at least 30 minutes every day! Yes, even when it’s cold! Get that fresh air into your space- you can heat it up later!
Mitigating EMFs is a reality in this world. Never has humanity been bombarded with so much in the way of frequency pollution. Symptoms of bombardments with frequency can be sleeplessness, irritability, fatigue, headache, dizziness and many more. There are frequency harmonizers on the market like Somavedic and there are EMF protection devices like BlueShield. Regardless of what you decide- choose one. Additionally, turn off Wi-Fi in your home in the evening. Don’t charge or keep your phone near where you sleep and put it into airplane mode so that it isn’t searching for a signal. And try and utilize a blue light shield on your devices. You can also use blue-light glasses whenever possible. The blue light of phones and many TVs are trickery to our brains. It causes them to think it’s time to be awake and alert, setting off our natural sleep patterns. When your quality of sleep decreases, so many other systems in the body begin to suffer shortly thereafter.
Ingredients in many of the products you love could be keeping you sick. If you think of this logically- how could people survive all these thousands of years without Lysol and antibacterial soap? The answer is: you don’t need it. More to the point, almost every household product in your house that you think you need is a gimmick. My grandmother cleaned with what her mother cleaned with: vinegar, water, lemon oil. Killing bacteria means eliminating both good and bad strands. A balance exists in nature and in our bodies of bacteria and even viruses. Killing them all, is never the way. In fact, over killing bacteria causes bacterial resistance and overgrowth of bad, opportunistic bacteria. This can cause a shit-storm, (literally) of health issues. Things are supposed to break down and reincorporate with nature. Soap is the result of a straightforward chemical process using natural ingredients. Don’t be afraid of something like lye and not something like polysorbate 80. This defies nature, that should be the first sign that it deserves no part of your life. Think about your ancestors. They were strong, hearty survivors. Don’t buy into the hype that you need to buy Clorox wipes to be clean. On the contrary, they’re not clean to my standard at all! Toxic, endocrine disrupting ingredients, no thanks. This goes for all the products you have. Break it down to the basics and take a toxic load off your body.
If you live in a moldy or water damaged house- it could be the key to what is keeping you ill. It’s important to be sure you’re living environment is mold-free. Once settled in your body, mycotoxins wreak havoc on you, causing progressively debilitating symptoms. To heal, this must be changed. Have your home tested for mold if you suspect water damage or do not know the origin of your symptoms. Being chronically fatigued, runny nose, tingling limbs, brain fog, sinus pressure- this can be from living in a moldy environment.
Your community is part of your environment! What kind of people are around you? Are they people that lift you up and make you feel good about yourself, or are they people that bring you down with their negativity or lifestyle choices that do not align with yours? You should never have people around you that cannot celebrate your successes. This is a huge red flag- and that means family, and friends alike. If they’re not rooting for you- move on without them. Leave them in their place and you move onto yours. No one should stay stagnant to make another feel comfortable.
Your environment is paramount to healing. You might take it so far as to say it is impossible to heal when your body is constantly combating its surroundings. In order to restore, you must be able to rest- and you’re never really resting if you’re bombarded by electromagnetic pollution, free radicals, poor air quality, pesticides, herbicides, fake light, endocrine disruptors camouflaged as fragrances and preservatives and poor company. Over time, your body will broadcast its discomfort with its surroundings. Headaches, unexplained fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety and others. As time progresses, those symptoms can turn into disorders- which really translates to: your body has overloaded it’s toxic bucket. You’re now over-flowing and it’s time to start supporting your systems to eliminate and rethink your environment, pronto.
I’ve added a few other little life hacks not mentioned that make my daily life healthier and less toxic!
I love using a red light. Letting it shine in my face and skin is good for mitochondrial health as well as those winter blues. I diffuse some essential oils and enjoy a 10–20-minute session as often as I can! No matter if you have a red light- there is no true substitute for sunshine. Even if it’s December- it’s still beneficial to get outside and get sunlight into your eyes and onto your skin. One of the reasons for the low mood is a lack of vitamin D. Get it every chance you can- make outside part of your environment. Taking vitamin D with enough healthy fat in your diet is essential to utilizing these nutrients. I also supplement with B12 for energy in the darker months.
I have a greenhouse to extend my ability to interact with plants and nature even when it’s very cold. A tiny space heater and a grow light keep flowers blooming all year long and this helps my mental health immensely.
I take shilajit every morning to help my body heal and rid itself of free radicals. Shilajit is a thick apoptogenic, resin said to contain more than 84 minerals, and sourced from high altitudes under intense conditions, often from India and the Himalayas. It comes in several forms including pellets, resin, and powder. Make it as a tea on its own or in coffee in the morning.
Since a lot of us must spend a fair amount of time inside and in high-allergy areas, it’s a good practice to use a sinus rinse regularly to counteract this negative environmental issue which can cause mold, mildew and yeast to accumulate in the sinuses. This can mimic the symptoms of allergies and end up being more severe. A few good options are simple saline rinses, you can use a neti pot with colloidal silver and nasal rinses using xylitol which is naturally anti-microbial.
I have a Somavedic frequency harmonizer in my bedroom. It is said to work in 100 feet
in every direction, so it covers most of my house. This helps mitigate the effects of EMFs by creating a harmonic boundary. Your body can rest and heal without attempting to combat harmful EMF pollution.
